Sep 14, 2007 - I have a handful of bullets that were cast with this mold, and they measure out. Bullets cast of linotype from the same mold, even though they weigh less. With a bullet cast in the cavity and drilled for a screw like Snuffy says. And in doing so I have tried every cast bullet 'designed' for the Blackout and every single one of them sucks. I have been pretty disgusted with the cast bullet designs out there for the 300. On every single mold out there you have to load them to magazine length which can affect reliability in a standard magazine. Actually, a harder alloy will make a larger bullet. Bullets I cast of wheelweights are quite a bit smaller than bullets cast of linotype from the same mold, even though they weigh less. The higher tin and antimony content means there will be less shrinkage, which is why linotype is the alloy it is. It didn't shrink when cast in the linotype machines.

I just bought a Lyman cast mold 45 cal, 225 grain mold. Well after lubing and sizing some of the lead rounds I mic them. Most of the bullets were with in a 1,000 of each other. Well I decided to put these bullets on the scale. These bullets were already lubed. I was amaze at what they weighed in at. 234.1 grains.

I am sure the lube makes up some of the weight but from what the mold said 225 grains, I thought 234.1 was a pretty good jump, I even had some weigh in at 234.5. Is this normal. I am just using lead from tire weights. The softer your alloy is, the heavier your bullets will be.

If you are using soft alloy, your weight is normal. Lyman #2 or Hardball pistol alloy will be closer to the specified weight than wheel weight scrap. Wheel weight scrap works best with low pressure practice loads. The #2 and hardball work best near Jacketed Start Level or alloy specific loads from Lyman.Being more concerned how they fit your firearm is way more important. Cast bullets in any type action should chamber 1 to 2 pounds harder than a drop in fit with jacketed ammo. When looking at a mold and the weight the manu says it drops bullets you need to know what alloy they are using to get that weight.I wouldn't be too concerned with that variance myself unless it was for benchrest. Rarely do my cast weigh what the mold says and usually they are on the heavy side. Start at min and work up.
